The Mesquite Community Theatre performed “Beauty and the Beast” on Friday, June 17th at 7:00 pm and Saturday, June 18th at 2:00 pm to full theatre seats. Both performances were sold out!

“We had to even turn a few people away,” said VVTG Youth Summer Program Director Wendy Wolfe-Killinger. “We realized we will have to add another performance next year.”

The performances took place at the Mesquite Community Theatre located at 150 North Yucca Street in Mesquite, NV.  The performances are part of the Virgin Valley Theatre Group Youth Summer Theatre Program.  The program was started last year by Wendy Wolfe-Killinger and Mitzi Bender, who both wanted to provide the chance for youth in our valley to become well-rounded actors.

“Not every kid is into sports,” said Killinger. “We wanted to provide those who love drama, theatre, and acting to learn the foundations of theatre and the performing arts.”

All the participants of the program had to pay a $25 registration fee and then some who could not afford the fee were given scholarships to attend. The youth tried out for parts and after roles were assigned, they all started practicing and working on the plays. Beauty and the Beast were given to the older kids while the upcoming play this weekend of 101 Dalmations was for the younger kids.

“We do have some of the kids in both plays,” said Killinger. “But we worked it out for all the kids to be part of the plays no matter what age. We even had some of the older kids volunteer to help with the younger kids.”

All-in-all there has been around 40 youth who have participated in the summer program this year, more than double last year. Wendy Wolfe-Killinger was more than elated about the results so far this year. “The youth have been amazing! We have had amazing donors, amazing volunteers, and amazing performances,” said the Director.
