The incident occurred in the southbound lanes of US 95 at about 6:45 am. The crash resulted in a full closure of US 95. Nevada State Police reported that the incident resulted from a tractor-trailer that was hauling construction equipment hitting the beam as it passed through the construction zone, causing the beam to fall, landing on the front of the unmarked police vehicle.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was cooperative during the investigation.

The identity of the LVMPD was released about a half-hour ago. The officer killed in the accident was 45-year-old Detective Justin Terry. Detective Terry was on duty in his unmarked vehicle working for the Homicide Sex Crime Bureau and Sexual Assault and Abuse Section to which he was assigned. He is a 21-year veteran of the LVMPD. He was also assigned to the Sexual Offender Apprehension Detail.

LVMPD also reported Terry started a program to help the homeless in which officers have access to dirt bikes so officers can reach the homeless in hard-to-reach areas and provide services and aid.

A police procession was performed to escort the body of Detective Terry to the Clark County Coroner’s Office. Detective Justin Terry leaves behind a wife and two sons.

NDOT has workers on-site making repairs that have been caused by the accident. The closure is expected to be until at least 8:00 pm tonight. Traffic is being rerouted off onto Durango Drive.

NDOT Private Information Officer Justin Hopkins released a statement that the beam that fell is put up as a warning to truckers of the height limit for the construction work zone. The tractor-trailer, if had no beam for warning could have potentially knocked down the whole bridge overpass onto multiple vehicles and people below. The beam helps prevent that from happening.

No identity of the driver of the tractor-trailer or company has been released.

This is breaking news and will be updated as more information is released.
