Memorial Day: No Greater Love
“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” (John 15:13)
Monday is Memorial Day in the United States. It’s a day to remember those who died while serving in America’s armed forces. It is a day to remember those who died while keeping America free, which should then be a vivid reminder, that freedom is never free. It is a precious gift given to us that cost the lives of so many.
But there is a greater freedom that was won over 2,000 years ago, freedom from sin and death, and it was purchased at a very great cost as well, as Jesus died upon the cross to set us free from sin and death in order to give us eternal life.
“Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh.” (Romans 8:1-3)
There was truly no greater love than this, as Jesus took our place and died the death we deserve so that we can be set free from the power of sin and death over our lives and be given His righteousness and eternal life in its place.
And it was all because He loved us.
God said He loved us with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3), and He has written His love indelibly upon His hands (Isaiah 49:16), which He showed on the day of His resurrection.
Today let us remember those brave men and women who gave their lives so that we can be free, and let us always remember what Jesus did upon the cross as He died to set us free.

Amen! That is precisely what I focus my remembrance upon during this time. But not just on Memorial Day but every day of the year. As grateful as I am for the men and women who gave their lives for the freedom of our country, there is no greater freedom than the freedom from sin and death. As for the comparison between the two, I am reminded of Romans 5:7-8, ” For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Jesus, through His death upon the cross, gave us the greatest freedom and the greatest love we will ever receive. And that love is for all eternity. We just need to receive His gift of salvation, which He paid the ultimate price for.
Thank you Debbie for your input and what it means to you. Take care and God bless
