For the first time in the NIAA 3A Southern Regional Playoff Tournament, the Eagles of Boulder City surprised the Lady Dawgs by giving them a scare in a semifinal game, leading to a narrow win by VVHS… 8-6. This time around the Lady Dawgs was fully ready as they shredded the Eagles 13-0 to win the NIAA 3A Southern Regional Championship.
“The semifinal game against Boulder City was a wake-up that the girls needed,” said VVHS Head Coach Travis Griffiths. “This time around they were inspired to make sure they didn’t make any mistakes.”
The Southern Regional Championship game was Friday the 13th at Virgin Valley High School’s softball field and all the bad luck was present for the BCHS Eagles, who seemed sluggish and a totally different team than the Eagles the Lady Dawgs played on Wednesday, May 11th.
The Lady Dawgs got a huge heave towards the victory by Brooklin Montoya who came up and absolutely pulverized the pitch as it sailed over the outer fence for a 2-run home run. At the end of the first, it was 2-0 in favor of the green and white and the Dawgs never looked back for the rest of the game.
They added 3 runs in each of the 2nd and 3rd innings, taking the score up to 8-0. In the fourth inning, the Lady Dawgs went on an offensive strike, adding 5 more runs. The tale of the offensive strike started with Riley Price hitting a double, followed by Ana Tausinga hitting a single. Evia Toone came up and down in the count with 2 strikes, and hit a hard drive to centerfield, scoring two runs.
With Evia Toone on second, Reggi Frei stepped up to the plate and hit a triple, scoring one RBI. Then Frei also scored off third when the Boulder City Eagles added an error off a wild pitch, allowing Frei to steal home.
With one last chance, the Eagles tried to get something going offensively that they did not have any luck with all game. Price finished off with 3 up and 3 down to finish the game by the mercy rule after five innings. The final score was 13-0 as the Lady Dawgs clenched each other in hugs from excitement as they were presented the Championship plaque.
The offensive star, Brooklin Montoya, went 1 for 3 with her home run, scoring one RBI and scoring herself.
“Feels awesome… Awesome to get team rally started,” said Brooklin.
The whole team for VVHS batted a .522 with 12 hits and 12 RBIs. Alex Covarrubias led the team with 4 RBIs off of 3 hits from a total of 3 times at the plate. Reggi Frei and Evia Toone also batted a perfect 1.00 at the plate, driving home 5 RBIs between them both.
Riley Price pitched a complete game allowing only one hit and 7 strikeouts in 5 innings. The Lady Dawgs were perfect in Fielding Percentage with 15 turnouts and 12 assists. The deciding factor of the game was errors as the Eagles had four errors while none for the Lady Dawgs.
Been a good week for the Montoyas, as Brooklin’s homer played a huge part in this win while her little brother’s (Mason) homer helped the Bulldogs baseball team win on Wednesday.
“Super proud of my brother,” said Montoya. “But every once in a while I gotta try to one-up him,
she stated with a laugh.
