The Southern Nevada Racing Association held their second race of the 2022 spring season at the Beaver Dam race track this past Saturday. The day was sunny and warm with only a light breeze blowing and there was a good crowd for the event. The drivers ranged in age from 5 years to 17 years old and came from as far away as Salt Lake City. The drivers were given approximately 2 hours to practice and make adjustments before the drivers meeting and racing began.
The drivers meeting consisted of addressing some changes in a couple of the rules and a refresher course in the rest of the rules. Visual aids were supplied to assure that all of the drivers had a clear understanding of the expectations. The drivers were also told that there would be random weigh-ins so that everyone was assured of a fair race.
The importance of safety for the drivers and the spectators was addressed, along with a reminder of the importance of staying on top of the caution flags at each of the 4 points along the track. Each flagger spot was equipped with a fire extinguisher, so they would be close at hand if needed.

To some this may seem like just a bunch of kids getting together to have fun driving the race cars, but it definitely was amazing to see the level of professionalism that these young drivers brought to the track.
The volunteers walked the track several times during the races to assure that there weren’t any hazards on the track. One of the volunteers found a large piece of metal that was removed. A tense moment when one of the drivers lost their clutch bolt, but a spectator by the name of John happened to have an assortment of bolts that he brought over to see if any of them would work. Disaster averted, both times.
After 8 heat races the drivers took a 30 minute break so that the track could be watered and reconditioned. Then the real racing excitement began. The drivers were definitely in it to win it! There was some pretty intense racing and the victors did a couple of victory laps with the checkered flag. The smiles on their faces could be seen through their helmets, they were so big.
A lot of the spectators left after the heat races were done, possibly not realizing that there was more to come after the break. They really missed out on a lot of racing action as the drivers were racing not only for points but the bragging rights and “trophies”.

After the racing was complete, and stats were checked, the awards were handed out to the drivers. Like in the Olympics the drivers received a lanyard with a cutout of the cars in their class. The first, second and third place drivers stood proudly while the parents and volunteers took their photos. It was definitely a moment worth watching.
The Southern Nevada Racing Association has two tracks that it uses for their program, the Logandale, NV track at the Clark County Fairgrounds and the Beaver Dam, AZ track on Old Pioneer Road off of Highway 91. The next race will be held again at the Beaver Dam race track on March 5, 2022. Visit their website or Facebook page for more information.
