The Mesquite Recreation Center has something for everyone. If you are looking for a way to get out of the house and get moving, it is definitely worth checking out some of the fun classes and activities going on (or coming up soon!) at the Rec Center.

For example, youth sports are about to go into full swing, with Little League registration going on from now until February 19th for kids ages 8-14. There will also be youth T-Ball and Coach Pitch for kids between the ages of 4 and 7 beginning April 4th (but make sure to register before March 19th at 6:00 pm). The Rec Center also offers dance classes, and be on the lookout for dodgeball coming soon!
There are also some great options throughout the community for adults. The Rec Center offers classes for yoga, spin, and Tough Country Fitness, a high-intensity workout program. HIGH fitness is also a great option if you are looking for an aerobics blend. For fans of sports, two softball leagues (one coed, one mens’) will be starting March 15th and 16th. Team registration ends March 5th.
However, one of the highlights of the Mesquite Rec Center is its Lifelong Fitness Program. This program is for community members ages 60 and up, and focuses on creating and maintaining healthy lifestyles for our residents. Nick Montoya, Director of the Athletics and Leisure Services Department, explained that this program got started around 15 years ago. They wanted a way to reach this group of older adults in the community and see what they could offer them in terms of staying fit. They had expected around 40 people to show up to their first meeting and ended up with over 100. The program has since grown tremendously. “Right now, we’re averaging 950-100 Lifelong Members… [and] some of them will do more than a 20-year-old will do!” Nick said during our interview.

One of the great things about this program is that it is cost-effective. If you are a member of the facility, you can attend any of the classes for free! Otherwise, there is a small fee of $5 per class. However, when you look at the cost of a membership ($35 per month for Mesquite resident seniors), it just makes sense to utilize the monthly membership that allows you access to the rest of the facility. There are even many healthcare programs out there that will cover the cost of the facility membership.
Some of the classes offered through the Lifelong Fitness Program are Yoga, Cardio, Aquatic classes, Step Aerobics, Zumba, Kickboxing, and various dance classes ranging from Tap to Clogging. There are classes going on from 6:45 am to 1:00 pm, and each class is 45 minutes to one hour long.
In addition to all of the great things happening inside the Rec Center (and its associated facilities), the Mesquite Recreation Center is also involved in various events around the community. Some of the events that are happening soon are the 18th Annual Mesquite Heart Walk on Friday, February 11th at 9:00 am, the Mesquite Showgirls Denim & Diamonds Dinner on February 14th, and the ever-popular Mesquite Senior Games that will begin March 4th (registration is still open for most events).
If you are interested in learning more about any of these classes or activities, please contact the Mesquite Recreation Center by calling (702) 346-8732 or visit them on 100 W Old Mill Road. The Rec Center is open Monday-Thursday from 5:00 am to 8:30 pm and Friday-Saturday 5:00 am to 6:00 pm. You can also find them on Facebook or Instagram.
