
Virgin Valley High School is approaching the last week of the regular season for all winter sports. This includes boys & girls basketball, wrestling, and girls flag football.
Both the boys and girls basketball teams will conclude with a winning season and head to the regional tournaments. The boys are coached by Head Coach Ty Wakefield and assisted by Stuart Humes, Kai Davis, and Ben Leavitt. The girls are coached by Head Coach Cliff Hughes and assisted by Koko Davis, and Travis Griffiths. Friday, February 11th the boys and girls teams will travel to Moapa for their final regular season game. The following Monday and Tuesday will begin the Southern Regional Basketball Tournaments. High Seat will host throughout the playoffs. At this point, there is a good chance the VVHS teams will host the first play off game. Eight teams make the regional tournament and the two top teams from the south will attend the state basketball tournament being held in Las Vegas on February 25th and 26th.
The Wrestling team is coached by Head Coach Skyler Woods and assisted by Jeremy Woods, Scott Woods, and Brian Poole. The wrestlers are preparing for a regional tournament to be held at Virgin Valley High School on February 12th. The team is led by seniors, Peanut Workman and Jaron Hafen. VVHS has one of the top three teams in the tournament and are looking to dominate and bring the regional championship title home. The 1st – 4th place athletes in each weight class will advance to the state Wrestling Tournament in Boulder City on February 19th.
The VVHS Flag Football team is the number one 3A team in the state as they enter the final week of the season undefeated. The team is coached by Head Coach Joey Bowler, and assisted by Robert Nelson, Brian Haviland, and Sandy Bryant. This dynamic group of girls has clinched a playoff spot with their 4-0 conference record with two games left to play. Senior night for girls flag football will be held February 8th at 4:30 vs. Western High School. The Class 3A Flag Football Championships will begin on Monday, February 14th hosted by the top seed which is our very own VVHS team. The semi finals will follow on Wednesday, February 16th with the finals on Tuesday, February 22nd.
As the winter sports wind down, spring sports will kick off on February 19th. Spring sports at VVHS include Track and Field, Baseball, Softball, Boys Golf, and Swim. Any students interested should contact the Head Coaches or Tina Jensen in the Athletic Department Office.
