Gary Eldon Hillius Jr. was a beloved member of our community. He passed away on January 26, 2022, and leaves behind his wife, Leora, and their four children. Funeral services were held on Thursday, February 3rd at the Hafen House Ranch with the graveside services on the following day.
Krissy Thornton, a close friend of the Hillius family and one of the creators of the fundraiser, shared what Gary meant to both her family and the community. “He would give his shirt off his back for anybody,” she recounted. “He didn’t judge you, he just loved you.” She talked about how Gary had looked after her family during their own struggles and how kind he was to everyone he met. Gary worked at Mesquite Gaming for 20 years and has been a huge part of the community. He coached sporting events, served the members in his ward, and would go out of his way to comfort and help anyone in need.
To help the family with the financial burden of this loss, friends and family have put together a fundraiser in his honor. The dinner and raffle fundraiser will be held on Thursday, February 10th from 5 pm to 7 pm at Heritage Park.
There are so many people that have stepped up to help put together this fundraiser. Ruth from US Foods, Justin from Sysco, and Mesquite Gaming have donated the food for the event. John Woods, David Alejos, and Danny Allen have all volunteered to prepare the food. The young men from the Hillius’ church ward have offered to help set up the event as well. Prize donations for the raffle have come from over 20 businesses and individuals in the community. Other people who have helped put together this event are Laura Rivas, Richard Cook, Jose Guillen, Brandy Christensen, Jamie Worthen, and many other friends and family members.
The price for the dinner will be $15 a plate for individuals 12 and up, and $10 a plate for 11 and under. The raffle tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. You can also donate directly to the family by sending money to Leora’s Venmo account, @Leora-Hillius. All of the money made from this fundraising event will go directly to Gary’s wife, Leora.
All of the contact information to order food or raffle tickets before the event can be found on the flyer at the end of this article. There is also an option for take-out or delivery if you are unable to attend the fundraiser. They have asked that any delivery orders be placed before 1 pm the day of the event.
