“Wheelie” drives around the track, entertaining the fans.

If you weren’t in Beaver Dam, Arizona on Saturday, January 8th, then you missed out on a great time. Near-record crowds attended the third Lawnmower Race of the 2021-22 season.  The races draw people from all over the Virgin River Valley including a person in a helicopter, which is a big hit for the kids to see.

The races are a great opportunity to get together with friends.  Cars, trucks, and ATVs of all types make the trek through the desert to watch the action.  There Is a hill on the south side of the track where a lot of the side by sides line up.   They have a birds eye view of the action.

The highlight of the races was the grudge match between Hippie and Nate.  The racing was fierce, with a caution being thrown at about the halfway point.  A restart resulted in a neck and neck race with Hippie crossing the finish line a fraction of a second ahead of Nate.

“Hippie” waves the checkered flag after winning the grudge match.

Have you ever wanted to see a lawnmower pop a wheelie? You were in luck if you were at Saturday ‘s race, because a driver nicknamed Wheelie put on quite a show. Making several circuits around the track resulted in plenty of lawnmower wheelie action.

The Lawnmower races are held on the second Saturday of each month at the Beaver Dam Race Track, located behind the Beaver Dam Station & Bar, off Old Highway 91, from November through May.  The line-up begins at 10 am and the Races begin at 11.  All times are Arizona Times.  The races are free to watch, but donations are gratefully accepted.  Bring your lawn chairs , your appetite, a beverage of your choice and kick back and wait to be entertained.

Food was provided by the Road-Kill Grill with all of the donated proceeds benefiting the local Food Bank..  Hamburgers, Hot Dogs and Chili with all the fixings.  Great food for a great cause.  Donations were also collected to help offset the costs of maintenance and fuel for the lawnmowers.  Special thanks go out to all of the volunteers that make the event happen and to Hal Seifert for supplying the lawnmowers.

Drone footage provided by Sonny Graham of the track can be seen on the Beaver Dam Arizona Communities Facebook page.  John Ethridge and Andrew Snyder are working on getting a video up of the races, so head on over to the Beaver Dam Lawnmower Racing Facebook page to see what the excitement is all about.
