The Virgin Valley Bulldogs Boys Basketball team continues to win and play excellent basketball under the tutelage of Head Coach Ty Wakefield and Assistant Coach Stuart Humes. During the last week of play, the Bulldogs went 2-0 beating out Coral Academy of Sciences (0-2) on Wednesday, December 8th and then claiming victory against Southeast Career Tech (1-6) on Friday, December 10th.
The first game was against Coral Academy Falcons where they won by a score of 76-64, but the game was not as close as the final score. The Bulldogs were up by more than 25 points early in the second half so the bench players were put in and got some good playing experience. The Falcons were able to get more rebounds in the 4th, especially on the offensive side allowing them second chance points to close the gap for the final score.
The next game was one of the best shooting games of the season for the Bulldogs as they clobbered the Roadrunners on Friday by letting the 3-pointers drop. The Bulldogs almost nailed 50% of their 3 pointers, hitting 14 of 30 for 46.7% for the game. The best showing from 3 point range was from Shooting Guard Benson Leavitt (#23) who heated up and remained on fire for the rest of the game. Even the bench got in on the 3 point action in the 4th dropping 3 straight 3 pointers late in the game. The final score was 82-29.
“We are really working together as a team and finding a great chemistry,” said Head Coach Ty Wakefield.
This amazing performance of a game was 26-14 in favor of the Bulldogs after the first quarter. With 5:52 left in the 2nd quarter, Leavitt hit his 3rd shot from downtown and then with 4:30 left in the 1st half Point Guard Stratton Waite (#1) stole 1 of 19 steals by VVHS, ending the run with an alley-oop to #20 Kyler Sudweeks who laid it in without touching the ground. The Bulldogs went in with all of the momentum at half leading 43-19.
The second half didn’t get any better for the Roadrunners as the Bulldogs were quicker and more consistent on shooting. After the 3rd quarter, it was 70-28 for the score. The bench players came in for Virgin Valley with 7:15 left in the game and the momentum did not lessen up for them. The Bulldogs Bench continued to dominate on defense and scored 12 points in the 4th with only 1 point for SECTA.
“The Team did exceptional tonight,” said Coach Wakefield. “We play as a team so we will report team stats and not individual stats to the media. This is a team effort!”
The Bulldogs finished the game with 43.2% Field Goal Percentage, 8 for 11 from the Free Throw Line, and 33 Rebounds. They also added in 19 assists and 2 Blocks. 11 of 12 players scored, 10 of 12 players had rebounds, 9 of 12 players had assists, with 3 players who recorded double-doubles.
