The I-15 Southbound Lanes by Desert Springs Exit has been shut down just South of the Gorge due to an accident which was reported about 9:30 am PST to Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT).
According to witnesses who reported on social media, especially on Facebook’s local group page “Pain in the Gorge” reported a vehicle driving Northbound on the Southbound side of the freeway.
The wrong-way driver apparently crossed the median at high speeds from the Northbound lanes into the Southbound lanes.
“There was a guy driving on the wrong side of the road though that we barely missed thankfully,” reported Matt Waters from Utah on the FB group site.
Also Ash Crosby of Mesquite reported “just witnessed an accident southbound at the mouth of the gorge.”
Waters reported “We had to swerve out of our lane because he was heading right for us!”
Expect the lanes to be shutdown for a while. Possibly hours depending on outcome of seriousness of injuries and damage.
Alternative route is to get off in St. George and head back to the Old Highway 91 to Beaver Dam.
Story will be updated as information and news is released.
UPDATE: I-15 SB is open again but another accident at MM 80 has slowed traffic down to one lane. Expect 20-30 minute delay.
