The Virgin Valley High School Bulldogs wasted little time getting on the scoreboard Friday night against the Rams from Rancho High School. The Dawgs received the opening kickoff and marched downfield for 75 yards with Kellen Duggan going the last 19 yards for the score. The point after was blocked keeping the score at 6-0 early in the game. The Dawgs defense stiffened forcing a Rams punt to the Dawgs 27 yard line. Quarterback Gavin Brown ran for 10 yards hit Jimmy Kelley for 8 yards and a first down. Duggan continued the drive with 10 yard run followed by an 18 yard touchdown reception from Brown to Kelley upping the Dawgs lead to 13-0 with 4:28 remaining in the first period. The Bulldogs would add another quick score forcing a Ram fumble. Bulldog freshman tackle Alex Valle picked up the loose ball and rambled 15 yards for the score upping the Dawgs lead to 19-0. What started as a tough night for Rams quarterback Kole Lindholm got tougher giving up a fumble on a hard tackle and recovery by Bulldog Javin Laub. Brown made the pay hitting Kelley in the left flat who scooted through the Rams defense for an 18 yard T.D. with 37.6 seconds remaining in the first period. The Period ended with the Dawgs up 25-0.
The Rams began the second period with the ball and managed to gain two first downs before the Dawgs stopped them cold on the 43 yard line. The Rams 49 yard punt set the Dawgs back to their 17 yard line. The teams traded possessions before Bulldog Cameron Perkins intercepted Lindholm on the 34 yard line. Brown hit two long passes, one to Perkins for 15 yards setting up Duggan for another scamper for a 16 yard T.D. The Point after was good and the Dawgs led 32-0 after three periods.
The Rams began the fourth period with two first downs before Perkins got his second interception of the game giving the Dawgs a first down on the Dawgs 14 yard line. The Dawgs would then march downfield behind a botched punt and run by Perkins keeping the Dawgs drive going. The drive ended on a huge catch by Kelley for a 27 yard score and an insurmountable 39-0 lead. At this point of the game with 4:48 remaining on the third period clock, a mercy rule running clock began. The Bulldogs reserved mopped up the rest of the game. Q.B. backup Kurt Felix ran it in from one yard out to give the Dawgs a final score and a 45-0 win. Gavin Brown was again efficient going 13-17 pass attempts for 170 yards and 3 T.D.’s Duggan finished with 100 yards on 12 carries and two T.D.’s “ Cameron Perkins had his best game of the year,” said Bulldog coach Matt Woods. “The kids played well coming off that big loss to SLAM. The Bulldogs travel to Valley High School next Friday Oct. 8 before returning home the 15th hosting Western High School.
